AT&T Mobility (formerly Cingular Wireless), based in Atlanta, began as a joint venture between AT&T (formerly SBC Communications) and BellSouth. Cingular became wholly-owned by the new AT&T in December 2006 as a result of AT&T's acquistion of BellSouth. It is a provider of mobile voice and data communications throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. AT&T launched wireless services using enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) technology. The company also provides corporate email and other advanced data services through its GPRS, EDGE and Mobitex packet data networks.
